Being Mindful of the Here and Now
Apr 6th, 2009 by Donna Vandiver
I was reading the most recent issue of Harvard Medical School’s “Harvard Women’s Health Watch” and the lead article for April is about “mindfulness.” The ability to focus on the present to calm both body and mind. Since we all multi-task, we may find ourselves rushing around with no real mindfulness of what we are doing. Have you ever been driving and suddenly realized you are several miles past where you thought? You’re still on the right route, but you just have no memory of how you got where you are? If so, you probably have too many things on your mind!
What do they recommend? First of all, they talk about just slowing down, in general. Try paying attention to your own breathing when you stop at a red light. Or, before going to sleep and upon waking, take a few slow, deep breaths and focus on the effects of your breathing on your lungs, nose and abdomen.
Many people find meditation works for them, or just try to sit quietly for 20-30 minutes. (Yes, it will feel like an eternity!) But, that’s the point. Slow down. Increase your mindfulness. Do one thing at a time and enjoy the here and now.
