Weekly Wrap Up – June 10
Jun 10th, 2011 by Christopher Gatzke
If your brain hasn’t fried from the work week (or the hot weather we’re having), relax and catch up on the news with this week’s Weekly Wrap Up:
1. Advertising with the Dark Side
Darth Vader is an excellent spokesperson these days. Just as Volkswagen’s Super Bowl commercial “The Force” used Vader’s image to gather nearly 40 million YouTube hits, Disney is using him to hype their new Star Tours attraction at Disneyland. Creating a successful advertising formula is no easy task, but it seems some companies have found the right ingredient. Who else is an immediate attention-getter?
2. Delta’s Military Baggage Fees
Delta Air Lines got caught in a negative social media blitz this week. After an Army staff sergeant posted a video complaining about the $200 baggage fee Delta charged for his fourth bag of military equipment, the online community exploded with harsh criticisms of the airline. Delta changed its policy the next day, allowing military personnel to check up to five bags for free. Some analysts are applauding Delta’s speedy response, while others say it was too little too late. What are your thoughts?
3. Angry Birds Brand
Rovio’s Angry Birds has developed mobile games, browser games, plush toys and apparel, and soon the company will have its own cookbook. At the Open Mobile Summit in London this week, Angry Birds announced it will brand a collection of recipes with eggs as a key ingredient. It seems the creators are riding the brand’s recent wave of popularity, but will Angry Birds translate successfully to the kitchen? Let us know what you think.
